ワルシャワ渡航記 Part39: 逆脱出ゲーム

 　春が訪れたかと思っていたら、今週は気温が急に下がり今日は氷点下まで冷え込んだ。外は雪が降っていた。会社から帰ると、マンションの入り口が封鎖されていた。入り口で使うデジタルキーも動作しない。終わった。

　入り口にはポーランド語で書かれた張り紙が。ポーランド語分からない。Google翻訳を使って翻訳したところ、工事のため暫く封鎖するらしい。しばらくは別の入り口を使ってマンションに入ってくれとのこと。

　ポーランドの建物には複数の入り口（klatka）がある。厄介なのは、使う入り口によってたどり着ける部屋が違うということだ。自分のマンションには10個のklatkaがある。どこに臨時用のklatkaがあるのか分からなかったので、入り口に立っていた人に聞いてみた。どうやらその人もマンションに入りたいが入れないらしかった。

　ということで、セラピストをしているらしいポーランド女子と一緒に入り口を探すゲームが始まった。結局臨時入り口から入って、階段で2階上ったあと、狭い秘密の通路を抜け中庭みたいなところに出て、自分のklatkaをトライ&エラーで探し出さないといけなかった。

　自分の部屋に辿りつくまでに30分くらいかかった。Such is life.

ワルシャワ渡航記 Part38: レイオフがあった

　会社でレイオフがあった。何人かの同僚が会社を去ることになって非常に悲しい。「会社に来たらなぜか入館証が機能しなくてクビになったことを知った」とか、「会社のサイトに突然ログインできなくなってクビになったことを知った」など、日本企業では考えられないような混乱があった。

　個人的な意見だが、レイオフという経営判断は正解だったと思う。レイオフをしないで数年後に会社に大きなダメージを与えてしまうよりは、はるかにましな選択だし、当然の選択だったと思う。むしろ判断は遅かったとすら思う。

　いちワーカーとしては最悪自分がレイオフされてもいいと考えていた。いくら景気が悪いといってもBig Techで働けるくらいのスキルがあれば、再就職に困ることはないだろう。いっそ無職になって2,3年遊んで暮らしてみるのもいいかもしれないし、起業にチャレンジするのもいいかもしれない。みんな悲観的になりすぎだろうと呑気に考えていた。

　しかし、このような発想ができるのは自分の母国が豊かで平和な国であるからだということに後になって気づいた。自分の場合は、レイオフされたら日本に帰ればOKだ。十分納得でいる職を探すのも簡単だろう。だが、戦争をしている国から来ている労働者はどうか、ハイパーインフレでまともな生活ができない国から来ている労働者はどうか、政府が腐敗していて賄賂なしでは何もできない国から来ている労働者はどうか。

会社の評価サイクルが終わって給与更新があった。

十分に期待通りの成果を出せた（本当か？？）ということで、給料がいい感じに上がった。加えて追加のストックオプションも貰えたので、Total Compensastionで言うと50%くらい給料が上がったことになる。

なるほど、こうやってBig Techは優秀な人材を自社に引き留めるわけか。
